In Suffolk County Council's 2020/21 Business Plan, Matthew Hicks (Leader of Suffolk County Council) launched and championed the Big Suffolk Conversation.

“A conversation that will encompass as many voices and ideas as possible from across the diverse demographics of Suffolk to help with a single aim - to create a long term vision for our county, led by the people of Suffolk and used to help inform decisions across our county.

  • What do we want Suffolk to look like, feel like and be like in 2050?
  • Where should our communities be?
  • How should older residents be cared for?
  • What kind of future do we want for our children?
  • And as important: How will we pay for it?

These questions cannot be answered in isolation, but require joined-up thinking, planning and vision. I am excited to see where this conversation leads us.”

Whilst the council’s main priorities are focusing on Housing, Inclusive growth, Commercialism and Climate change, with the ongoing and change in circumstances, what the council achieves means creative planning around our ever evolving priorities; and now (more than ever) we need to be thinking about the future and what we want it to be like.

We want you to be part of Suffolk’s growth and development in providing a Lexcel quality assured legal service to assist and support the council in achieving its goals and objectives this year and beyond. To reflect the fast-moving agenda for the council, our legal service has recently transformed its design and business model in becoming an able and effective strategic partner in developing the scope and landscape of the 'long term vision of our county'.

You will be able to demonstrate an intellectual flexibility in working across several disciplines whilst assisting the legal service management team in creative day-to-day workings of the service. Highly developed people management skills are a must as the service requires optimum support of the staff across differing levels and abilities.

Examples of duties you are expected to undertake:

  • to be the County Legal Expert within the specialist area and make decisions using initiative and professional judgment
  • leading and delivering high quality, cost-effective legal services to internal and external clients
  • to manage the most complex and difficult legal cases, following the Lexcel quality procedures, from inception to completing on target, without direct supervision
  • handling professionally the most difficult and/or complex issues within their legal area, holding a specialist caseload and managing the expectations of clients and members of the public
  • leadership and management to those within their line management and to other professional staff across Suffolk Legal, including 1:1s, mentoring, recruitment, training, supervision, and development
  • major contributions and expert advice to corporate governance and strategic projects to ensure the best possible outcomes for the Council
  • to be part of the Legal Services Management Team as required and to contribute towards the development of Suffolk CC Legal Services
  • deputising for Legal Services Managers as required.
