Fee paid post – £408 per day in Suffolk and £428 per day in Norfolk.

There are no fixed hours with this post but the expectation is that you will be available regularly and be able to offer your services for approximately 4 days each month. Flexibility will be required to enable the needs of both services to be met. On some occasions you may be asked to be available out of hours in the absence of the Senior and Area Coroners.

Suffolk and Norfolk County Council are seeking to appoint up to three Assistant Coroners to work across one or both Coroner areas.

The number of reported deaths per annum is approximately 2,600 in Suffolk and 3,200 in Norfolk.

The post in Suffolk is based in the dedicated court and coroner’s office at Beacon House, Landmark Business Park, White House Road, Ipswich, Suffolk IP1 5PB, and in Norfolk you will be based at the Coroner’s Court, Carrow House, 301 King Street, Norwich, Norfolk NR1 2TN.

You will work closely with the Senior and Area Coroners to review case files and conduct Inquests in court, bringing each case to a sound conclusion in line with the requirements of the Coroners and Justice Act 2009.

You will be required to demonstrate a high level of knowledge and application of coroner law and of basic medicine, have proven skills in conducting a wide range of complex investigations and a high standard of court procedure. You will also need to demonstrate the excellent communication and interpersonal skills necessary to deal with sensitive situations. 

You may have experience of working as an Assistant Coroner, including carrying out investigations, case management and conducting inquests or have similar comparable experience in the legal environment.  

You will be a barrister or a solicitor or Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives and satisfy the judicial-appointment eligibility condition on a 5-year basis.  You will be under the age of 70, have experience of working as an Assistant, Area or Senior Coroner and be subject to the appointment and eligibility conditions within the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 (s.23 and Schedule 3).
